Ready, Tech, Go!
Tips for selecting devices and getting connected.
Mac or Windows?
Your main device should be a Windows or MacBook. Do not rely on a Chromebook or iPad alone. An iPad is an amazing secondary device, but you may need a full operating system to run software.
Determining Factors:
- Familiarity & Experience
- Software Preferences*
- Your Major
Note: If you are in a technical major such as Engineering or Computer Science or a multimedia major like Studio Art, ask your college what they recommend.*Note: Software may also be accessed remotely through the UA VCAT (Virtual Computing Access Technology)
Most budget laptops will support average daily use in college, but for multitasking and running intensive programs simultaneously, you may wish to boost up memory and have a modern processor. For Macbooks, if you plan to use note taking apps with transcription, you need the M-Series chips and the latest operating systems.
🚀 Optimal Specs
This setup ensures your laptop won't stutter, freeze, or drop your Zoom call when you are sharing your screen and presenting.
- Memory (RAM): 16 GB to 32 GB. (If you can afford 32 GB, get it. 16 GB is the bare minimum for heavy multitasking).
- Processor (CPU): Intel Core i7, AMD Ryzen 7, or Apple M2/M3/M4 chip.
- Storage: 512 GB or 1 TB SSD (Solid State Drive). Avoid anything labeled "HDD."
💻 Ideas
- If you prefer Mac: Apple MacBook Air or MacBook Pro with at least 16GB of Unified Memory. (Avoid the base 8GB Mac models if you plan to do heavy multitasking).
- If you prefer Windows: Consider getting a touchscreen for note taking.
Don't forget to think about portability. Materials such as carbon fiber or ceraluminum, although costly, are super lightweight!
If you are majoring in a technical major like Computer Science or Engineering, check with your college! You may need more!
